Cardinal Mahony Clergy Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Nets
$60 Million
The clergy sexual
abuse lawsuit against the Catholic California archdiocese
run by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony has been settled at $60 million.
Mahoney has stated that he thinks the settlement is fair and just
and went on to apologize on behalf of the offending priests and
himself for his roles in reassigning priests to where they still
had access to boys.
Mahony stated that the molestation of boys
by priests is both a sin and a crime. The settlement covers
45 cases of clergy sexual abuse from the 1940s to the 1990s.
Out of the $60 million settlement, the Catholic Church
will have to pay $40 million with the rest of the money
covered by insurance. Mahony reassured individual parishes
that they will not be affected by the settlement.

Over 1,000 claims for clergy sexual abuse have been filed in
California, partly because a 2003 law extended the statute of
limitations for such claims. Even though 45 claims have just been
settled with an average of $1.3 million per claimant, over 500
clergy sexual abuse lawsuits still remain to be settled at a future
date.
