Families of USS Cole Sue Sudan for Wrongful Death
The families of the 17 sailors who were killed in the USS Cole
bombing on October 12, 2000 are suing Sudan for wrongful death.
A federal judge in Norfolk, Virginia is allowing the $105 million
wrongful death lawsuit
to go forward despite resistance from the Sudanese government.
U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar has
not issued a ruling on whether the laws from the U. S.,
Yemen or Sudan apply to this case. The wrongful death lawsuit
alleges that Sudanese authorities provided both training
and financial support to al-Qaida terrorists responsible
for the bombing.
The Sudanese government has denied involvement stating
that there has been no connection between the authorities
in Sudan and the al-Qaida network of terrorists.

The Sudanese government has also stated that the U. S. federal
court lacks jurisdiction in the case. In 1996, the U. S. Congress
amended its laws to allow plaintiffs to seek damages against foreign
nations who are deemed to be state sponsors of terrorism.
