Wheat Farmers Sue AWB over Saddam Hussein Bribes

United States wheat farmers will be reviving a $1 billion lawsuit in the coming weeks that contends the Australian Wheat Board (AWB) shut them out of a lucrative agricultural deals with Iraq. The class action lawsuit, which was filed earlier this year and then withdrawn, contended that AWB bribed Saddam Hussein with AU$290 million for exclusionary deals that shut out U. S. competition.

Lawyers for the six original plaintiffs in Kansas and Virginia withdrew the filing so that they could review the impending Cole Commission report that came out this week. The Cole Commission report is said to be very helpful in making the case for the wheat farmers.

The lawsuit is expected to be refilled by the end of the year in Washington, DC with the request that it be certified as a class action lawsuit. Under this certification, U. S. farmers who lost money due to the illegal activities of the AWB will be compensated.

The Australian government is currently investigating whether, from their perspective, the AWB committed illegal activities. The U. S. Department of Agriculture is investigating whether or not they will stop doing business with the AWB altogether.
